The jubilant Liverpool manager saluted his players for defying the odds and halting Real Madrid's recent winning run with a 1-0 Champions League triumph that stunned the 80,000 crowd inside the Bernabeu.

The emphasis soon switched to growing doubts over his own position, but he was quick to stamp on speculation that he was about to leave as he confirmed talks had taken place between his advisers and those of Liverpool co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.
