I HAVE a Privilege Isa with Coventry Building Society paying 4.7 pc and wanted to transfer it into the society's new Isa paying 6 pc, but was refused. This seems unfair. Can it do this? M.H., Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands.

YES. HM Revenue & Customs' Isa rules say you can transfer your Isa from one bank or building society to another, which allows you to make sure you always earn a good rate. But there is nothing to say a bank or building society must accept transfers from one account to another. Other top-paying accounts such as Egg (6.05pc tax-free) Barclays Tax Haven (6.5 pc, including a 1 pc bonus for a year, and NS& I Direct Isa (5.3 pc) operate in the same way.
