RECENTLY, while having a meal with my daughter Tara at a restaurant, we were interrupted by a badly behaved little boy. First, he smashed a glass down on the table so hard it broke.

He spent the rest of the meal lying under the table wearing my sunglasses that he'd pinched, or running around the restaurant. I watched with horror and anger as his exhausted mother ran after him.

Why was the simple matter of getting this small child to sit in his seat causing her so many problems? Why couldn't I just enjoy my meal in peace?
