WITH a heavy sigh Brendan Cole is - as he often finds himself doing these days - defending his reputation. 'Everyone seems to think I'm some kind of Casanova but I'm not,' he insists. 'I'm not a cheat. I don't play around outside relationships.

'I'm 30 years old and having a good time, and I'm friends with some high-profile women, but that's pretty much it. This lothario label all seems a bit unfair to be honest.' His good-natured indignation is pretty convincing, but the evidence, it must be said, is rather stacked against him.

Cole has become the most prominent instructor on the BBC's smash hit Strictly Come Dancing - which has pulled in nearly nine million viewers - and after four series obviously fancies himself the star of the show.

He and his dance partner, actress Claire King, have almost been disqualified for breaking rules, leading one of the judges to describe him as a 'prawnhead'.
