DAMNED if we stay. Damned if we pull out. With our troops forced to keep a low profile in Basra yesterday and the local provincial council refusing to co-operate with them because of 'British aggression', Tony Blair's sorry misadventure in Iraq stumbles deeper into the quagmire.

What price now, all those confident claims of success? For two years, we have been assured that Southern Iraq was a beacon of stability and hope assurances that turn out to be as misleading as every other claim made about this war.
