ANYONE who has ever had to work from home and clear the laptop off the kitchen table to make room for dinner, or found themselves scouring the kids' pencil cases for a pen that actually works, will appreciate the value of having a study.

Even if you can't afford the space for an entire room, consider screening off an area of your sitting room or dining room, or even using that often neglected space under the stairs. As a study is usually an exclusively adult space, you can get away with using the sort of pale shades that you might often shy away from in the rest of the house.
