SOUTHAMPTON controversially parted company with manager Paul Sturrock and promoted Steve Wigley to the role of head coach after only two matches of the new Premiership campaign.

The changes were overseen by chairman Ruper t L owe on Sunday, 24 hours after Saints appeared to hand Sturrock a lifeline with Saturday's lastminute victory over Blackburn.
