Dear Minister Harney, I am an 18-year-old girl who suffers from two 70-degree curvatures of the spine, and when I first heard about the cutbacks I was sickened. Scoliosis is a severe condition that threatens thousands of children's lives and in many cases they need immediate attention before their internal organs become punctured.

How could you have the heart to impose cutbacks on such a significant hospital, saving hundreds of children's lives a year? You say that this extreme measure is to 'balance the budget', but why should young children be put at risk, the future generation? I doubt that you have ever had the harrowing experience of waking up every morning with that searing, dagger-like pain in your spine. What has the Irish health system turned into? A monster? Disease is no longer the target it seems. The people who suffer are the prey now.
