For years, I lobbied him on behalf of another Scottish writer, for my money the pre-eminent Scottish writer of his generation, who was paying Connery an enormous compliment in offering to do a memoir, rather than a nitty-gritty autobiography. Finally, Connery agreed - but then pulled out because he had not been able to contact the writer (who was locked away finishing a book).
