SYDNEY SWANS have not given up on Tyrone football sensation Kyle Coney returning to play for them, insisting that he could be the most successful Irish player to play in the AFL. While All-Ireland minor winner Coney appeared to rule out a return to Australia this week, claiming that he wanted to play for Tyrone and his club Ardboe, the Swans still believe that the player has to make a final decision.

After spending six weeks at the club having signed a two-year rookie contract, the teenager was due to return to the Swans this week along with the club's other Irish stars, Tadhg Kennelly and Brendan Murphy, but instead has opted to stay at home. Yesterday, a Swans spokesman confirmed that they had been in contact with Coney and the door remained open for him should he return. 'We are a bit disappointed that he is not back in Australia already but we are fully supportive of Kyle and his family, because we understand it is a difficult decision to make for an 18-year-old,' he said. 'We are fully supportive of him and are happy for him to take a bit of extra time and hopefully he comes back to Australia to play for the Sydney Swans. 'We are doing everything possible to convince Kyle and his family that this is a perfect opportunity that he should take up. But if he needs more time we are supportive of that. 'We have been speaking to Kyle and we don't want to go into detail about those conversations but at the moment, he remains undecided,' added the club spokesman yesterday.
