SWEDEN appeared to have turned its back on its welfare state yesterday, with exit polls indicating voters had chosen a conservative alliance pledging to cut tax and benefits.

Frederik Reinfeldt's centreright coalition is likely to topple the Social Democrats, who have been in power for all but 10 of the past 89 years.
