Summary

SUBSTITUTE Cathal Sweeney was the Galway hero after he scored the decisive goal to send the Tribesmen into the semi-finals of the Connacht minor football championship at Tuam Stadium on Saturday. Sweeney was set up for the crucial score by his twin brother Patrick going into the final quarter, making no mistake from close range. Galway manager Gerry Fahy was relieved when the Sweeney twins conjured up a score to thwart a brave Sligo side.

'We knew Sligo would be very tough but we are just thrilled to get the win and hopefully now we can push on from here,' said Fahy. Sligo, playing with the breeze in the first half, had carried a three-point advantage into the break. David Maye kicked a fine opener after three minutes and another from Niall McDonagh on 11 minutes stretched the gap to two. Two points from Eric Monaghan levelled matters for Galway, but two injurytime frees from Maye gave Sligo a deserved lead at the break.
