The usual treatment is to correct it in an operation under general anaesthetic that takes about 20 minutes. His GP said there was no urgency about operating, but James booked himself in for surgery a few weeks later, in early December.

I was abroad at the time, and so his father, Nick, agreed to go with him.

Nick told me that James was apprehensive about the operation, and I could understand that.

He loved being fit -- he didn't smoke, he didn't drink much and was so anti pills that he wouldn't even take Nurofen for a headache.
