ONE WEEK in spring 2002 Mark Kendal, from London, was a highly paid barrister, appearing in a criminal trial at the Old Bailey. The next week he was a shop assistant operating a till.

Mark, 30, who gave up his legal career to follow his dream of being a retail buyer, says: 'I got home after that first day ready to go straight back into law - but within a week I was hooked.' Two years after joining as a management trainee, Mark is now assistant to the merchandising director of John Lewis. 'I liked the law, but I wanted more. I'd always loved fashion and shopping, and when I met buyers it sounded like the ideal job.
