Summary
WE'RE told of the 'true compassion and humanity' exhibited by the Turks in erecting a memorial to Allied soldiers who fought in Gallipoli during the Great War (Letters).
Sadly, the same compassion and humanity was not extended to those poor troops who had the misfortune to be captured by them. Of the 14,000 British and Indian troops captured following the fall of Kut in Mesopotamia in 1916, almost 5,000 were to die in captivity. The welldocumented barbaric treatment meted out to them by their captors was reminiscent of a later war and a different enemy.See the full content of this document
