Talks between hospital consultants and health services employers broke down again last night at the second attempt. At the centre of the dispute is the issue of consultants working for the public health service taking on private patients as well under socalled Category Two contracts.
Consultants have accused employers of being devious. Employers say consultants are inflexible. There has been distrust between the two sides since the consultants accused the employers of not informing them they wanted to negotiate the issue of Catagory Two contracts, which enable consultants paid by the health service to take on private patients as well. Minister for Health Mary Harney has targeted the consultants in her reforms of the health service. She believes that consultants who are employed and paid for by the public health system should spend their working day on public patients, not on private ones.See the full content of this document
