THE Government merits a gold star for explaining matters of great public importance to its people. Thats us of course. I mean I now fully understand why the Taoiseach and the TDs all merit a pay rise and a decent pay rise at that. Its something to do with the rigours and pressures of the life of a politician, isnt it? All those long nights in the Dail, the lack of holidays, the stress which power brings; I wont bore you with it. I know you know too.

I also understand completely and fully why most public servants will not receive any pay rise whatsoever. Thats because they earn enough already and are probably very good at managing their money isnt it? And if the Taoiseachs individual pay rise is more than what many people earn in one whole year, then thats because he is important and works very hard isnt it
