The Children and Young Persons Act allows for those as young as 13 to work up to five hours on a Saturday and 25 hours in a week at the age of 15, that rises to eight hours on Saturdays and 35 hours weekly.

There is no legal minimum age for baby-sitting although 16 is recommended by the NSPCC and other than paper rounds, the over- 13s may try helping out in shops, hairdressers, coffee shops (not bars), hotels, offices, cleaners, stables, gardens and with odd jobs.
