THE high failure rate in Leaving Cert maths and sciences, the most striking feature of this years results, is being spoken of as one of the greatest threats to our knowledge economy.

According to Fine Gael education spokesman Olwyn Enright, the poor results are due to the Governments failure to implement all of the recommendations of a special task force on the physical sciences. Somehow I doubt that the deliberations of a think tank on the matter have much bearing at all on the job of motivating students to perform better in maths and science subjects.
