KHARTOUM is probably a very different place from how it was in 1993 when I was working there as a teacher in a school similar to that in which Gillian Gibbons was employed. Sadly, I could stay for only six months as George Bush Snr decided to attack Iraq.

Then, as now, the Africans were mainly Roman Catholics and were under attack south of Khartoum because of their colour or their religion.
