TINY metal hoods may soon be a new way to protect children's teeth from decay, without the need for drilling and filling. The metal caps, cemented into place over baby molars which already have signs of decay (called caries) are designed to seal the tooth and stop it from getting any worse until it falls out naturally at around the age of ten.

Research, to be published within the next few weeks, will show that the treatment, which does not involve anaesthesia, drilling or any other work on the tooth, is highly effective.
