LITTLE Britain! The sale of the QE2 by her American owners marks the end of an era. At one time we built some of the greatest ships in the world. Now most of the famous yards are silent. We no longer make anything or own anything significant.

At the last Farnborough Air Show, the most publicised achievement was the order for wings for a Canadian plane. What was the last plane designed and made entirely in Britain? Most of what is left of our motor industry is foreign-owned. Who would have believed at the end of World War II that within 50 years Rolls-Royce would be in German hands? Many of our financial institutions, major airports, sea ports, public utilities and power companies are foreign-owned, and future development of our nuclear power industry has been handed to a French government-owned company.
