THE 2M Group proposes a high-speed rail link to connect the north of Britain to the south to reduce the need for air travel (Mail). This was in existence 40 years ago: it was called the Great Central Railway.

It was designed for high speed and even catered for the extra size of Continental rolling stock. It would have fitted trains carrying modern shipping containers, which have caused hundreds of millions of pounds to be spent raising bridges and lowering tracks in tunnels.
