DR GRAHAM RICHARD says 'alcohol is mainly sugar' and 'alcohol is rich in sugar' (Good Health). Alcohols and sugars (or saccharides) are two totally distinct classes of organic compounds.

The simplest alcohol is methyl alcohol, which contains one carbon atom (and also three hydrogen atoms and a hydroxyl group). The next alcohol in the series is ethyl alcohol, or ethanol (two carbon atoms) and is the substance which is commonly imbibed and called 'alcohol'.
