Summary
AS LOCAL people fought the recent battle of Tewkesbury to keep flood waters out of their abbey, it is fitting to recall that in the years following the famous Battle of Tewkesbury of 1471, during the Wars of the Roses, the welfare of a whole army was largely decided by the flooding of the Severn.
In October 1483, the Severn flooded on a scale without equal since. Beginning on October 18, great rains and floods combined to prevent nearly all human enterprises in Gloucestershire.
