ROARING fires and fine food may draw us into our homes, and away from our gardens, in the run-up to Christmas, but elements of the outdoors do follow us into our living rooms.

Holly, ivy, mistletoe and, of course, Christmas trees all come in from the cold and join the party, providing the perfect seasonal backdrop to our festivities. Unfortunately, these magical living ornaments are too often shunned in favour of lacklustre artificial creations, and every effort should be made to make the most of the real thing.
