THEY were sustained by Marks & Spencer sandwiches and Woolworths pick 'n' mix sweets. It was the early hours of Wednesday morning, and it seemed there was still a chance - a slim chance - that Woolworths, the retail chain that has adorned British High Streets for the past 99 years, might just be saved.

As lawyers, accountants, bankers and businessmen sat around tables in meeting rooms at Woolworths' imposing 1950s offices overlooking Marylebone Road in West London, they knew that the task of finding how Woolworths might escape the crushing burden of its debts was going to a challenge.
