BEFORE the end of last year, the doomsayers were saying that the West End had all these new hit musicals Mary Poppins, Woman In White, The Producers - but no decent plays.

Well, now Shaftesbury Avenue is packed with them; plays like Festen and A Life In The Theatre. But the real heavy-hitter is Mike Poulton's adaptation of Friedrich Schiller's Don Carlos, which, after transferring from Sheffield to the Gielgud Theatre, has become the West End's must-see drama.
