THERE is no evidence for the implausible story that HP sauce is named after an impecunious gambler called Harry Palmer (Mail).

There's no mention of a Palmer in the history of the sauce which attributes the origin of the name to Garton, the Nottingham grocer who was told that a bottle of his sauce had been seen in a restaurant in the Houses of Parliament - hence HP.
