JOHN Beckham could not have comprehended the lifestyle that his great-great-great grandson David, above, would lead.

He was a scavenger employed by a London council to wade into the mud of the Thames at low tide to search for bits of coal, rope, bones, shoes or copper nails that could be sold on.
