Three More Elvs Set for French Test

THE controversial Experimental Law Variation (ELV) which sees most penalties replaced by free kicks will receive its first northern-hemisphere trial in France over the next six months. The Espoirs Championship - a French equivalent to the Magners 'A' League - will conduct an expanded trial of ELVs that were used in the recent Super 14 and Tri-Nations competitions but were not included in the worldwide experiment.

The so-called 'sanctions ELV' has huge support in Australia and ARU chief executive John O'Neill insisted yesterday it 'delivers a better game'. But that is a matter of strong debate, particularly in the northern hemisphere where it has regularly been described as a 'cheat's charter'. Every offence except offside and foul play is penalised with a free kick rather than a penalty.
