Selling any form of contraceptive was long illegal in the Irish Republic. Offenders faced a fine, condemnation from the pulpit, and imprisonment. Married women were doomed to years of pregnancy and childbirth, and many died under the strain. In the first of a new series, Chris Ledgard tells the story of a group of women who, in 1971, took the risk of openly bringing contraceptives from Belfast into Dublin.
