Summary
Ena 11.30am, Radio 4 Big-armed, bigbosomed, hairnetted women once stood guard on every street corner. They had faces like bulldogs chewing wasps, and Ena Sharples (pictured) was their patron saint. Mark Radcliffe pays tribute to Violet Carson - the talented actress, pianist and singer - who carved Ena from granite and made her the rock on which Coronation Street was built.
