TRANSLATION costs for police investigating crimes involving immigrants rocketed to more than Pounds 24million last year - an increase of 64 per cent since the expansion of the EU in 2004.

Police say they are having to spend huge amounts of taxpayers' money on translators because many of the immigrants who commit crime, or are witnesses to it, speak little or no English.
