WHAT a shambles this week has been. In one of his better mome n t s , E n d a Kenny put it well, saying the Budget 'is now merely a discussion document'. Less crisply, resurrecting an impenetrable manner of speaking deployed by his predecessor, Brian Cowen did what political leaders almost never do and admitted his authority has been damaged.

But actually, while Fianna Fail is bearing the brunt of the current turmoil, the authority of the political class as a whole is looking fairly ragged after a week of dithering, contradiction, and sheer opportunism on all sides of the Dail.

As Taoiseach, Brian Cowen is the most obvious casualty because the ongoing chaos is so obviously his fault.
