INSTEAD of introducing expensive computers into primary schools, schools secretary Ed Balls should encourage the use of the abacus and the alphabet to develop manual dexterity, literacy and numeracy more cheaply.

By reciting the timeless nursery rhymes of Mother Goose and discussing them, pupils would be well-prepared for later life. For example, the topics of violent behaviour, healthy eating and managing money are adequately covered in Who Killed Cock Robin? Jack Sprat Would Eat No Fat, Oranges And Lemons and Simple Simon.
