JO-WILFRIED Tsonga went for a walk on Court One yesterday. Back and forth along the baseline he trudged. Sometimes he lifted his shoulders with a Gallic shrug, sometimes he gazed to the heavens, but mostly he wore the glazed expression that only comes from watching tennis balls whizz past you all afternoon.

The balls -- missiles, more like -- were propelled off the racket of a 6ft 10in giant from Croatia called Ivo Karlovic. Tsonga will not care if he never hears that name again after a 7-6, 6-7, 7-5, 7- 6 defeat that must have felt like water torture.
