QUESTION Despite his cheeky cockney persona, was cricketer Phil Tufnell educated at one of Britain's top public schools? PHIL TUFNELL is proud of his parents and in his autobiography Phil Tufnell: What Now? described them as 'typical, driven, middle-ofthe- 20th-century Londoners', a product of post-war austerity.

His father, Alan, was a thirdgeneration silversmith 'banging out molten silver in sweatshop conditions'. His mother, Sylvia, his rock, was a housewife. By the time Tufnell was born on April 29, 1966, the family had dragged themselves up to the middle-class comfort of Hadley Wood, North London.
