IT IS a damning indictment on Ulster's season that while Munster entertain hopes of a second Heineken Cup triumph and Leinster are on the verge of clinching the Magners League title, the northern province are stuck a dogfight with Connacht merely to keep their place in Europe's premier competition next season.

Ulster have been ever-present in the European Cup since its inception in 1995, famously becoming the first Irish side to win it in 1999, but their future participation remains in jeopardy ahead of tonight's crunch showdown with Connacht at Ravenhill.
