EMERGENCY crews began reconstruction work in Leenane yesterday after its bridge was destroyed in flash floods.

Two of the original bridge's three arches were swept away in minutes, after three hours of torrential rain swelled the river to record levels. Bizarrely, while the heavens opened over Leenane, there was no rain at all in nearby Letterfrack or Westport.
