ON WEDNESDAY, Tony Blair made an extraordinary admission to the House of Commons that has scarcely been noticed - an admission so damning that even if he and his colleagues had done nothing else that was wrong over Iraq he should in all conscience resign at once.

Here was a man who had told us again and again that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and argued that it was this possession, which was beyond any shadow of a doubt, that justified and explained the Anglo-American invasion of Iraq. This is what he said on Wednesday.

'I have to accept that it seems increasingly clear that Saddam did not have stockpiles of chemical or biological weapons ready to deploy.' In other words, despite Mr Blair's absolute and unequivocal assurances, Iraq did not have any weapons of mass destruction after all.
