IT IS a peculiarly Scottish quirk which has led Aberdeen to be ridiculed in the run-up to tonight's UEFA Cup Group B finale with FC Copenhagen, merely for having the cheek to still be in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.

The real censure, of course, should be heaped upon UEFA for allowing three out of five teams to progress from the group stage, a dubious format designed solely to prioritise cash-generation over sporting considerations.
