WALES can count on a huge result at the World Cup next year, irrespective of how their team perform. They stand to make more than Pounds 8million from a shrewd bit of business with France.

The guaranteed sum involved, at least Pounds 6m and rising with every sold ticket, comes from a private arrangement with the hosts entitling Wales to more than the gate revenue for their four matches at the Millennium Stadium. It gives them one-fifth of ticket sales for the entire tournament and the French expect the figure to top Pounds 40m. The deal is the quid pro quo of a bargain struck 10 years ago when the two French votes proved crucial in Wales defeating Australia to host the 1999 tournament in a secret ballot, supposedly by one vote.
