THE number of patients stuck in acute hospitals because there is no proper aftercare or support in the community has soared by almost 50 per cent.

The statistics, contained in a Health Service Executive report, show the number of 'delayed discharges' - so-called bed-blockers - has jumped from an average 514 per week in 2007 to 757 a week this year.
