QUESTION Can monkeys swim? MOST mammals have the instinctive ability to swim, except humans and many monkey species including gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, orang-utans and most gibbons, and giraffes. There are reports of apes in zoos falling and drowning in moats without any struggle.

Some monkeys, however, can swim naturally. Borneo's proboscis monkeys are excellent swimmers, but will do so only when necessary, as when crossing rivers. They will cross at its narrowest point doing the doggy paddle.
