FOR ME, the sea has always been a beckoning horizon. On spartan family holidays as a child, standing on a beach of cold, shiny pebbles, I gazed out at the grey waters of the English Channel under a threatening sky, longing to sail away to the sun.

Fifty years later that dream has become a reality. Whenever the diary and the bank balance allow, I pack my bags and take a cruise.

Whatever your taste, all cruise ships have one thing in common.

You can climb aboard, unpack, surrender your passport and your credit card and let the ship take the strain. The ship will take you wherever you want, with no hassle, no map-reading, no arguing with hotel porters or struggling with suitcases.

While I understand the misgivings of cruise virgins, I urge them to overcome them. After all, where else can you see magnificent sunsets over the sea, or race dolphins, or drink gin in a whirlpo...
