AS EACH day of this abysmal summer dawns even more depressing than the last, it's hard to remember that things were ever any different.

With sightings of the sun now rarer than Red Kite, small children pester their mammies to tell them again of the mythical days when you could see clear across O'Connell Street, when people ventured out in just a layer of Piz Buin plus the minimum demanded by decency and when the air was filled with the chimes of ice-cream vans. When long stretches of the Naas dual carriageway were above sea level and there were significant swathes of dry land in places like Leopardstown, Stillorgan and Leenane.
