ALL PARENTS would like to be able to choose the schools their children attend. So why do we persist with a system which denies that choice? It denies it even though various Labour MPs exercise it for their own children and from their own pockets. The basis for this limitation of choice is a mixture of historical accident, Socialist arrogance and vested interests.

The accident was a late 19th-century Act of Parliament which effectively nationalised most schools. The arrogance is illustrated by the Labour Cabinet minister who first openly asserted that 'The man in Whitehall knows best' and also by Lord Hattersley, who once argued that parents were too ignorant and irresponsible to be allowed such liberty. The vested interests arise from the main, Left- leaning teaching unions who resist change.
