HALIFAX, the UK's biggest savings bank, is indeed giving a little bit extra - but to itself, not millions of its savers.

Yesterday, its new savings rate came into effect, but only four of its newer savings accounts actually went up by the full 0.25 of a percentage point by which the Bank of England raised the base rate.
