YESTERDAY, after six gruelling election nights and in reluctant acknowledgment that 21st-century journalism has moved a little beyond the age of the spiral- bound notebook, I went out and bought a laptop computer.

For many years, of course, I've had a proper computer a big fat beast on my desk at home but these days you need besides a small portable pet with what's called 'wi-fi' capacity, allowing you wirelessly to surf the Net and email away your deathless prose at the tap of a button.
